In an alleged suicide pact, a Physics lecturer died after consuming poison near Bidadi on Friday, while her student is battling for life at a private hospital.

The victim identified as Mamatha, 32, worked at Sarvajna College in Vijaynagar and her student, Amogh, 20, is a resident of Nagarbhavi, said the Ramanagar police.

Mamatha’s husband works with the Bescom, the police added.

Mamatha came to Bidadi along with Amogh and they allegedly consumed poison in the wee hours of Friday.

Hours later, a few passersby noticed them lying on the ground and alerted the police, who rushed them to a nearby hospital.

The reason for them taking the extreme step is yet to be ascertained, added the police.

Fire mishaps

Property worth Rs three lakh was gutted when a footwear shop at KR Puram caught fire Saturday morning.

Neighbours noticed the fire and alerted the fire personnel, who rushed to the spot and managed to prevent the fire from spreading to other shops.

Sources in the Fire department said short circuit may be the reason for the accident. None was injured in the mishap.

In another incident, fire broke out in an office in Indiranagar Saturday morning. Fearing for life, a few employees who had come to office early rushed out of the office.

Soon, two fire tenders came to the spot and doused the fire.

The Fire department officials told Deccan Herald that short circuit was the cause for the fire and property worth Rs five lakh was gutted in the accident.
