A dentist allegedly hanged herself from a ceiling fan over a trivial issue at her in-laws’ house in Mattikere on Monday.

Yeshwantpur police said Shilpa, 30, daughter of Narasimaiah and Shantamma, was married to Jagannath, also a doctor, three years ago.

The couple stayed in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, where Shilpa was working as a dentist with a private hospital, and Jagannath was an assistant professor at a medical college there.

The couple have a one-and-half-year-old son, Subhang.  The couple had come to the Vivek Nagar house of Jagannath’s parents two days ago for Deepavali.

Monday was also the birthday of Jagannath who had gone out to meet his friends. He reportedly chided Shilpa when she asked him to come home early to spend time with her.

After returning home, Jagannath refused to go out with his wife. Shilpa went to a room on the first floor of the house and locked herself up.

When she did not open the door after repeated knocks, the family broke open the door only to find Shilpa hanging from the ceiling fan.

She was immediately rushed to a nearby private hospital where she was declared brought dead.

Shilpa's mother, Shantamma, an employee with the Karnataka Information Department, in her statement to the police said that her daughter and son-in-law lived happily and there was no harassment from him or his family. She has stated that her daughter used to play up trivial issues and overreacted.

She has stated that she does not suspect anybody for the death.
