If you are planning to give a new look to your house but can’t think of the right theme, then Mala Ashok has some tips for you.

Classical decor has always focused on black and white colours. For those of you who love this combination there is good news, black and white pieces are in great demand in home fashion trends for 2013.

Whether it is lighting fixtures or cabinets and whether your total decor is classical or contemporary, black and white would be the best combination. It doesn’t take much experience to stay in trend with the addition of a few accessories such as vases or throws and cushions in the timeless colour combination of black and white.

If you are looking for some ideas then try a mix and match of black and white vases in stripes, polka dots, geometrics and solids. Brilliant black and white patterns work well as floor art under the sofa or dining table. You can also get creative and replace lamp shades with pleated black and white shades and if you are really daring cover the dining chairs in black and white pinstripe for a masculine feel/ touch. The colours black and White are often termed as non-colour colours. They work with every colour combination and blend in easily with any existing colour combination. So, there is no need to hesitate when introducing these two colours into your decor.

Small spaces like bathrooms also lend themselves well to a black and white makeover. If you have white toilets and sinks then  you could consider painting some or all of the walls black. If this seems like too abrupt a change you could hang some black and white patterned towels on the towel racks. Black and white accessories like soap dispensers can add a ‘wow’ effect to your bathroom. Also, these two colours serve a very useful decor function in the kitchen.

The backsplash can be a black and white patterned tile – even a diamond pattern. If your dishes are white then you can add a few black and white patterned side plates and serving pieces to preserve the black and white theme.

Black coloured appliances or stainless appliances which are in vogue are part of this combination. Another major trend now-a-days is to replace prints with high gloss, life-sized black and white photography. These could be a great piece from a gallery or just an enlargement of your own photos. Black and white prints work well on side tables and nightstands providing a timeless glamorous look. Though it seems paradoxical, a touch of this classic combination will bring a contemporary feel to any space.
