Home Ministry officials confirmed the death of Abdul Majid Siddiqui, alias Masjid Manihat, but said they did not have details about the incident and are investigating the case. The body of 57-year-old "most wanted criminal" was found in a room of Laliguras Hotel in Nepalgunj, said Raj Kumar Baidawar, the Deputy Superintendent of Police.
Jaya Mukunda Khanal, Home Ministry spokesman, said the authorities do not have any further information regarding the murder. The police is investigating into the matter, he said. According to the police, the criminal was involved in counterfeit currency racket. He was arrested two years back by the Nepal Police, but was later released as per the court's order due to lack of evidence.
It is common for criminals from India and Nepal to use the porous border to seek shelter after committing crimes. The notorious Pakistani spy agency ISI has used these criminals to push counterfeit Indian currency into the country.
