A notorious rowdy was bludgeoned to death in full public glare near his house at JC Nagar Saturday morning.

Karthik alias Lodde, 21, was involved in more than 10 heinous crimes including murder and armed robbery.

According to police, Karthik was returning home on a two-wheeler when four assailants followed him on motorbikes and tried to attack him. Karthik sped into a congested road to reach JC Nagar. However, his attempt to escape failed as a car which came from the opposite direction blocked the road. The murderous gang stabbed him repeatedly killing him on the spot.

An eyewitness told Deccan Herald that the gang chased Karthik, pushed him down, stabbed him repeatedly before crushing his head with a stone.

A few local residents rushed to help Karthik but were threatened by the assailants. The situation in the area turned tense following the murder as some shops downed the shutters.

Police forces were deployed to thwart any untoward incident. DCP (North) S N Siddaramappa and Joint Commissioner of Police (West Division Crime) Pranab Mohanty visited the spot.

Karthik was a school dropout and used to work as a mason before entering the world of crime, police said. He was arrested for criminal activities and released on bail. However, he was heading a gang of small-time rowdies and resorted to extortion.
A senior police officer said there were reports of Karthik plotting a crime and the police were about to take him into custody.  He suspected gang rivalry for the murder.
