Addressing a press conference, BSP general secretary S C Mishra claimed that construction had been allowed only on properties not covered by the court’s order. “The media had been misled into believing that the state government had violated the court orders,” he claimed.

Misra, also the UP government’s counsel in the Supreme Court in the cases, expressed dismay at media reports, which he said made it look like as if the court had passed strictures against the UP government.

The BSP leader also cautioned the opposition parties against reacting on the matter as it was “sub-judice”.

Misra reiterated that the BSP government had spent a “meagre Rs 3 to 4 crores” on statues whereas the Congress had spent “thousands of crores of rupees” on creating memorials for leaders of the Nehru-Gandhi family. He said that BSP held all legal and constitutional institutions in high esteem and had never violated their orders.
