Ailing tigress dies at BBP

Last Updated 20 November 2012, 18:17 IST

Rajeshwari, a 14-year-old tigress, who was suffering from lumbar spondylitis (degeneration of the lower spine), died at the Bannerghatta Biological Park  (BBP) early on Tuesday morning.

The tigress, which was born in Bannerghatta in 1998, had been suffering from hind quarter paraplegia for the last three months. Though a team of veterinarians from the Veterinary College in Hebbal and orthopaedics from the Baptist Hospital attended to the animal, there was no improvement in her condition, which finally led to paralysis and death.

Visceral samples of the animal have been sent to the Institute of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Biologicals for examination. Rajeshwari leaves behind a 15-month-old cub. There are 46 tigers at the park.
