Talking to the press over election results, party General Secretary Prakash Karat said there will be a collective analysis to see what had gone wrong for them.
Karat rejected claims that the results indicate a rejection by the public of the CPM’s stance on the Nuclear deal.

"There are broader questions about our position and we would not blame a single leader in Kerala and West Bengal," Karat said, talking about the reverses the party had suffered in two of its strongholds.

"The Congress and its allies have succeeded on the platform on which they had contested the elections. We would see where we went wrong and what our weaknesses are during our Politburo meeting on May 18," he added.

Karat also declined to say if their stand against Dr Manmohan Singh had cost them, reiterating that the victory for Congress is "people's verdict". performance. He said the Communist Party of India (Marxist)  would continue to provide alternative policies. "Since the first elections in 1952, we have been fighting the policies of the parties in power. We didn't entirely agree with even those we supported. The Communists always had their own policies," he said.
