A student committed suicide by jumping from the Shantala drop, a suicide point atop the hillock in Shivangange near Dobspet, Bangalore Rural district.

The dead was identified as Vinay, 20, a second year BCom student of MES College, Malleswaram.

Vinay was reported missing from his house on Pipeline Road, Vijaynagar since Thursday evening. He lived with his mother and brother Kiran. Vinay, who had gone to the college on Thursday, had not returned home.

The priest of the Shivagange temple reported to the police that he found an abandoned bag at the Shantala drop, from where the Hoysala queen Shantala is said to have jumped to her death centuries ago.

The Dobespet police on Saturday searched the shrubs on the hillock and found a body stuck in a tree. The body was retrieved and sent to Government Hospital in Nelamangala for autopsy.

The police found a note in his bag. In the note, Vinay said that he was committing suicide as he had not performed well in the recent examinations.
