Concerned over growing criticism of his son’s government in the wake of the recurring communal violence, worsening law and order situation and hooliganism in the state, SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav asked his party leaders to ensure that they have a clean image.

He also counselled the state government to focus on issues concerning the common people. The senior ‘Yadav’ also cautioned the Akhilesh government against the ‘conspirators’, who he said could be the media or anybody. Samajwadi Party supremo told the party workers not to feel demoralised by negative publicity.

Speaking at a function here on Sunday, he said a section of the media had turned against the SP regime in the state but he refrained from taking any names.

“There is a conspiracy to tarnish the image of the chief minister and the government. Workers must be careful,” Mulayam said.

He also advised the ministers and the MLAs to keep their image clean and concentrate on the problems being faced by the public. Party members have also been advised to respect the law.

Mulayam’s advice to the government comes close on the heels of the revelation that the officials were not paying attention to the recommendations of the chief minister. Hardly 4 per cent references by the chief minister to the officials were disposed of and the rest remain pending, reveals an RTI reply.

Recurring communal clashes, since Akhilesh assumed office, have also been a cause of worry for Mulayam. He wants the government to quickly fulfill its poll promises, say the SP leaders here.

A few weeks ago, in a bid to get rid of the goonda raj tag which the ruling government has earned, the SP chief had cracked the whip.

Mulayam had told party members, “It is my appeal to you all to respect the law and conduct yourselves in a better way.”

“If we also break the law, how will we be different from the previous regime. We have to prove to the people that we are different,” Mulayam said.
