A Kannada book, entitled ‘Pictorial India: History of freedom struggle and Gandhiji’ was released by Governor H R Bhardwaj here on Monday.

The book, which presents a collage of freedom fighters who contributed to the Indian freedom struggle, was also released in English and Hindi.

Authored by senior freedom fighters, Somalinga A Malagali and Achyuth R Vadavi, the book narrates the heroic struggles of national leaders who sacrificed their lives for the struggle for Indian independence. The lives of Tatya Tope, Sangolli Rayanna, Aurobindo Ghosh are a few of the personalities featured in the book. The book also displays a collection of rare photographs of Mahatma Gandhi.

Speaking on the book, Ho Srinivasaiah, president of the Gandhi Memorial Trust said the book will help readers get a glimpse of the history of freedom struggle. “I believe, for the progress of the nation, the present generation must know about the country’s struggles of the past,” he said.

Bhardwaj echoed a similar sentiment and said awareness must be created among the younger generation about the country’s revolutionaries.

“It pains me that youngsters are not bothered to know about the great leaders who laid the foundation for the country,” he said and added that society today was moving towards anarchy, with greed having replaced humanitarian considerations.

“Even in Karnataka, which has seen scholars as its chief ministers earlier, the law and order situation is taking a beating these days,” he added.
