When Abdul Hakim and his lover Mehvish, both residents of Uttar Pradesh's Bulandshahar district (about 450 kilometers from here), eloped two years back, married at a court and settled in Delhi, they felt they had escaped the dreaded ''khap'' (caste panchayat), which had `sentenced him to death' for marrying in a different `biradari' (caste).

The couple's strong denunciation of the “khaps” and honor killings at the film actor Amir Khan's TV programme “Satyameva Jayate' later had also not gone down well with the panchayat members.

On Thursday last, Hakim was shot dead allegedly by the family members of Mehvish. The couple had returned to the village barely a few months back.

“The khap has now issued orders for my and my child's killing also'', Mehvish alleged.
Reports said Mehvish and Hakim came from different “biradari” and their families did not approve of their relationship. The duo eloped and married at a court at Aligarh before settling down in Delhi.
