Waste to be segregated beneath flyovers

The stench of putrefying garbage may become all pervasive if the Palike has its ‘unique way’ for garbage segregation. The civic agency is considering setting up waste segregation points beneath the flyovers across the City.

At a review meeting held on Monday, Mayor D Venkateshmurthy said the Palike officials should explore the possibility of converting empty spaces beneath the flyovers into segregation points.

“A small space beneath the Domlur flyover was converted into a garbage segregation point some time ago. We should look at the possibility of setting up such points beneath the flyovers in all the eight zones,” he said. He suggested that walls should be constructed around such spots to preserve the ‘aesthetics’ of the City and the space should be sold to advertisers to earn revenue.

According to sources in the Palike, the suggestion by the Mayor has been “well received” by the officials and the possibility was being considered.

However, a Palike official present at the meeting said the idea may not be received well by citizens. “Very little dumping space is available beneath the flyovers,” he said.

The meeting also considered transporting wet waste to Chikkanagamangala near KR Puram and dry waste to Mandur landfill. The Palike has zeroed in on KRIDL for setting up ward-level waste disposal plants.
