Ashwini-Pradnya win

Indian women’s doubles pair of Ashwini Ponnappa and Pradnya Gadre reached the quarterfinals of the Macau Open Badminton Grand Prix Gold on Thursday.

Pradnya and Ashwini edged out Thai pair of Rodjana Chuthabunditkul and Chanida Julrattanamanee 25-23, 21-19 in the pre-quarters. Ashwini then combined with Tarun Kona to overcome Chi-Lin Wang and Hsaio Ma Pai of Taipei 21-17, 22-20 in the mixed doubles pre-quarterfinals.

In the men’s singles, 12th seed R M V Guru Sai Dutt scored an upset win over seventh seed Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka of Indonesia 21-13, 21-18 to enter quarterfinals.

Results (Indians unless specified, pre-quarterfinals): Men: Srikanth K bt Choong Hann Wong (Malaysia) 21-17, 15-21, 21-12; 12-R M V Guru Sai Dutt bt 7-Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka (Indonesia) 21-13, 21-18.

Doubles: Ronel Estanislao/ Paul Jefferson Vivas (Philippines) bt Tarun Kona/ Arun Vishnu 15-21, 21-19, 24-22.

Women: Doubles: Pradnya Gadre/ Ashwini Ponnappa bt Rodjana Chuthabunditkul/ Chanida Julrattanamanee (Thailand) 25-23, 21-19.

Mixed doubles: Tarun Kona/ Ashwini Ponnappa bt Chi-Lin Wang/ Hsaio Ma Pai (Taipei) 21-17, 22-20.
