28,366 job cards allotted in Udupi district

1.58 lakh man days of work completed under NREG Scheme

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Zilla Panchayat CEO Prasanna Kumar informed as many as 6,405 lakh households in the district have been benefited from the scheme besides 1.58 lakh man days of work, he added.

A sum of Rs 4.15 crore has been earmarked for the project. Till date Rs 1.47 crore has been utilised under various projects. As many as 1,218 works have been undertaken in the district. However, only 58 works have been completed. The remaining 1,162 works are under progress.

The works undertaken under the project comprise of horticulture development and plantation, water harvesting structures, irrigation and canals, drains and road maintenance, land development, rural connectivity, drought proofing, rejuvenation of traditional water bodies  and other flood relief activities. As many as 28,366 jobs cards have been distributed in the district so far.

Recharging water bodies

The recharging of the water bodies in the district is taken up through water harvesting methods. The instances of the bore wells going defunct is a rare phenomenon in the district. The scarcity of water occur only during summer season. “Plans have been chalked out to take up rain water harvesting methods in and around the available water springs. If the recognised water source is found problematic, then the process of water harvesting structure is adopted to recharge the water bodies” informed the CEO.
The rejuvenation of the water bodies is being undertaken through traditional water harvesting methods like digging percolation ponds in the area.

As the district has received abundant rainfall there are grim chances of water scarcity in the coming days especially during summer, he anticipated.
