Advanced dust curbing system

Last Updated 03 December 2012, 18:55 IST

The B Kumar Goud Mining Company in Sandur has procured an ‘airborne dust suppression system,’ mounted on a six-wheeler lorry, to tackle the dust arising out of its iron ore mines.

The water-sprinkler and a generator are part of the system that can suppress dust rising to a height of four metres from the ground.

Five litres of water can be sprinkled per minute through a remote-controlled mechanism, even as the lorry traverses the mining areas.

The equipment, which costs Rs 40 lakh, is used in the iron ore mines of Goa, said manager of the firm Srinivas Rao, toDeccan Herald. The earlier method to sprinkle water from tankers had not been of much use in curbing dust in the air, even though 10 to 15 litres of water was used per minute.

Mining firms are now coming forward to purchase similar equipment, costing lakhs of rupees, to prevent  pollution caused by mining and its ill-effects on people’s health.

Consequently, residents in the mining areas see brighter days ahead.
