The weight-conscious feel blissful while those suffering from diabetes are soothing their taste buds with these sugar-free potatoes. But can potatoes be completely carbohydrate free? If the doctors are to be believed, no, for the starch content from potatoes cannot be completely extracted.<br /><br />“Markets are flooded with a variety of potatoes. From seasonal ones like ‘Pahari’ to organic potatoes, all of them have carbohydrate content. In clinical terms we consume 100 calories with every 100 grams of potatoes. So, the carbohydrate content can vary to a slight extent with each variety but it cannot be nil. Notably, the only difference lies in the storage of potatoes which are sprayed with chemicals (to preserve look and taste),” says Dr Sandhya Pandey, chief dietician, Columbia Asia Hospital. <br /><br />“People have a misconception that potatoes that are not sweet in taste have low carbohydrate content. Every variety of potato - whether sweet in taste or not has a good amount of carbohydrates. Surprisingly, customers are fooled by vegetable sellers who sell less-sweet potatoes as sugar-free,” informs Sandhya, who herself has found it to be a common practice in the marketplace. <br /><br />There are many people who are caught in the tentacles of these vegetable sellers and are happily consuming more amounts of potatoes than they earlier used to. One among them is Renu Mishra, a housewife. “Sugar-free potatoes taste good. </p>.<p>They are not sweet like normal potatoes and improve the taste of the curry. Meanwhile, I was concerned about my weight and since potatoes cannot be done away with from our food, I decided to opt for sugar-free potatos. I am no more fearful of gaining weight through potatoes.”<br /><br />The dietician however advises more caution, “First of all, people have to get over this concept of potatoes being sugar-free. Secondly, if you are counting calories then irrespective of the variety you are consuming, do not consume more than normal quantities.”<br /><br /></p>
