A 10-year-old student of a school in Uttar Pradesh’s Kannauj district died after he was allegedly thrashed by a teacher.

The incident happened at Gursahaiganj in the district, also the Lok Sabha constituency of chief minister Akhilesh Yadav’s wife Dimple.

The teacher, Rahul Kumar, allegedly thrashed class 5 student Sajid of Lucky Public School on Monday for not completing his homework.

According to reports, Kumar was so angry with the boy that he hit him repeatedly on the head and face with a stick. Sajid was taken to his house by Kumar after his condition worsened and he fainted.

The boy’s family members took him to a private hospital, where he died later.  Doctors attributed the cause of death to the head injuries he suffered. A case has been filed against Kumar a complaint was registered by the boy’s family, police said.

Kumar, however, denied he had done anything wrong. “I didn’t beat the student. I am being falsely implicated,” Kumar told police.

Incidents of students dying after being thrashed by teachers have been reported in UP often. Some months ago in Lucknow, a girl had died after she was thrashed by her teacher at her school.

Although the Supreme Court has banned corporeal punishment in schools, UP basic education minister Ram Gobind Chaudhary has openly advocated physical punishment in schools, saying it is essential to maintain discipline.

“Lack of physical punishment is promoting indiscipline. Students don’t fear their teachers. It is good for students,” Chaudhary had said while addressing a function a few months back. His remark was condemned by educationists.
