States lag in implementing labour laws, says Kharge

Last Updated 11 December 2012, 20:40 IST

Union Labour Minister Mallikarjun Kharge said the Centre is planning to make legislations to ensure implementation of labour laws in unorganised sectors. However, he lamented slackness on the part of the states in implementing labour laws.

Replying to a query in the Lok Sabha, Kharge said that contract labour enjoys same benefits as are enjoyed by regular workers. He said that they have benefits like provident fund and ESIC. However, every state did not implement it with commitment. They do not contribute, he lamented. Kharge said as far as the Centre is concerned, inspections are done and action taken against violators of contract labour legislations. He said that he had been writing to states on the issue.
