Gulbarga to shut down on Monday over tur price

Last Updated 14 December 2012, 17:32 IST

Several organisations under the aegis of Hyderabad-Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (HKCCI) have called  for a Gulbarga bandh on December17.

They demand the immediate market intervention by the government over the purchase of tur (red gram), the main cash crop of the region, at Rs 5,000 per quintal.

Though the representatives of different organisations had met Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar, his deputy K S Eshwarappa and others in Belgaum recently to prevail upon them on the need for making market intervention in the wake of steep fall in price of tur in the open market, they have failed to respond positively.

As the harvesting season of tur has already set in, small and marginal farmers stand to lose heavily by resorting to distress sales of their produce in the open market.

HKCCI president Umakant Nigudgi said the Centre had fixed a minimum support price of Rs 3,850 per quintal, but had withdrawn the distress sale incentive of Rs 500 per quintal for the first 60 days of the harvesting season. starting from December.
