Thirteen construction workers were killed when a slab of an under-construction building collapsed in Loni Kand village along Pune-Ahmednagar road, 133 km from Mumbai, state police control room said here on Tuesday.

Officers told Deccan Herald that rescue operation was going on as it is feared that more workers may be buried under the slab.

The labourers were engaged in work on the fourth floor of the building which is being constructed to house an Ayurvedic College in Loni Kand village, around 30 km from Pune city.

Police control room said that while the number of workers rescued from the debris is not known, “reports from Pune police indicated that at least one of the rescued workers was in a critical condition in the civil hospital.” Earlier reports had put the toll at four.

Police here said that a case has been registered against the contractor. They were also investigating the quality of materials used in the construction.

Most of the victims were reportedly contract labourers from outside Maharashtra.  However, the identities of those killed have not been ascertained yet.
