Set up fast track courts, Dikshit tells Chief Justice

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Tuesday requested the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court Darmar Murugesan to take urgent action to make five special fast track courts functional at the earliest to try sexual assault cases, reports DHNS.

The Delhi government, about a year ago had approved these courts to provide speedy justice and conviction of the guilty in cases related to sexual assault on women.

Dikshit in a letter to the Chief Justice, while referring to the gang rape of the medico-student, suggested to consider to not to grant bail to accused in such cases. This would additionally act as a strong deterrent, she added.

“In view of the rising number of such crimes against women and to provide immediate deterrent punishment to the guilty, the suggestions may be considered seriously and urgently,” wrote Dikshit.

She said her government would be willing to extend any type of support to make the courts functional.

Dikshit has sought an appointment with Union home minister to seek his immediate intervention in ensuring a foolproof law and order situation in Delhi to overcome such incidents. Chairman and members of Delhi Women Commission are expected to accompany her.

An official from her secretariat said she will meet him as soon as she is given an appointment.
