Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS) stunned fancied Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) 25-20, 25-16, 25-21 in the opening match of the fourth phase of the inaugural Karnataka Volley League at the Swami Vivekananda grounds here on Friday.

With the victory, DYSS ran away with three points while BSNL, the State ‘A’ Division champions, will have to wait for their next match to open their account.

BSNL, who are on a high after winning the second and third phases of the KVL, were a tired lot after finishing their engagements in Bangarpet on Thursday night. The weariness after travel appeared to have taken a toll on their performance in the match.

In the first set, DYSS stamped authority over their more superior opponents with captain Suraj G Nayak and Bharath B in good nick. The duo fired some point-winning smashes for the underdogs as they took a healthy 18-12 lead.

Although BSNL pulled back things through Sujith and Anil Bernard, DYSS held onto their lead to grab the set 25-20.

DYSS sailed through the second set comfortably 25-16 with Vinayak and Raison garnering them a large share of the points. BSNL’s only fight was put up by Karthik A, who fetched a few points which turned out to be inconsequential eventually.

The third set saw a similar tale unfolding as the first two sets. DYSS raced to a 11-5 lead with Ganesh and Nayak in the thick of action with their smashes and drop shots.

Anup D’Costa was off colour on the day but managed a few points for BSNL but it just wasn’t enough as DYSS closed out the match at 25-21.

Results: DYSS bt BSNL 25-20, 25-16, 25-21; ASC bt KSP 25-23, 25-20, 25-22.
