Vijay nets as RWF edge past Postal

Alex's brace fashions Bangalore Mars' win

Riding on a long-range effort from Vijay, Rail Wheel Factory edged out Postal 1-0 in the Super Division football league at the Bangalore Football Stadium here on Friday.

Vijay netted the all-important goal in the 53rd minute as RWF moved to seven points from five matches while Postal, who suffered their first defeat, now have five points from four matches.

Postal enjoyed most of the possession in the first-half which ended goalless as strikers from both the teams failed in front of the goal. But on a few occasions goalkeepers did the rescue act. RWF custodian Rajeevkumar Singh had to dive to his left to keep out a low right footer from Venkatesh as early as in the eighth minute. Rajeevkumar was again in the thick of action, advancing in the nick of time to collect the ball from the feet of Venkatesh in the 20th.

RWF had to wait for more than half-an-hour to test the rival goalkeeper Ravindran, who fumbled a long-ranger from Prakash but the skipper recovered in time to retrieve the ball.

In the second half, RWF coach Muralidharan pushed Vijay and Satheesh Kumar, who were ineffective upfront, to the midfield while promoting Prakash and Kavi Arasu as strikers. The tactics worked as eight minutes later, Vijay, who had a free run on the right flank, essayed a right footer that beat an out-of-position Ravindran and hit the far post before going in.

After the reverse, Postal made every effort to score the equaliser and replaced Venkatesh with Cyril, who got a chance to become the hero but the striker volleyed wide when Rajeevkumar was at his mercy.

In the ‘A’ Division, Alex netted a brace to help Bangalore Mars register a 2-0 win over Bangalore Kickers. Alex found the target in the 32nd and in the fourth minute of injury time of second half.

Saturday’s matches: ‘A’ Division: AGORC vs BUFC. Super Division: Students Union vs ADE.
