An autorickshaw driver has been arrested for stabbing a passenger to death and injuring his colleague over a tiff on payment of Rs 50 extra at Punjabi Bagh, police said on Thursday.

Manglu, 28, of Mangolpuri was held after investigating into the attack on Izhar and Javed on December 2. Police said Izhar was declared brought dead at Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital, while Javed underwent treatment for minor slash wounds.

“Initial probe revealed that Izhar and another colleague Sabhan Khan had taken an autorickshaw to their rented accommodation where Javed saw them exchanging heated words with the autorickshaw driver, Manglu,” said V Renganathan, additional commissioner of police (west).

Izhar and Sabhan claimed that Rs 100 was enough for their journey, but Manglu kept on insisting for payment of Rs 150. Sabhan left the place, but Izhar kept on arguing with Manglu.

Manglu then took out a knife and stabbed Izhar multiple times, and attacked Javed when he came to the scene to interfere. Local people tried to overpower Manglu, but he managed to flee with his vehicle. A police team specially worked on autorickshaw drivers and motivated them to provide information regarding the accused.

On Wednesday, a secret information was received that Manglu will come to Peeragarhi relief camp bus stand. On this information, a raid was conducted and Manglu was apprehended.

“At his instance, a knife used in the crime and Izhar’s mobile phone were recovered,” Renganathan added. A case of murder and causing hurt has been lodged against Manglu with Punjabi Bagh police station.
