Slum dwellers protest eviction

A large number of slum dwellers from Ejipura staged a dharna at the BBMP head office to protest their eviction from the EWS Quarters on Friday.

According to protestors, BBMP officials, accompanied by the police, began demolishing their sheds. “The action was carried out without providing us alternative location for rehabilitation and relocation,” one of the slumdwellers said. “The demolition work occurred at a time when children were preparing for their annual examination,” he added.

Protestors also alleged that the original allottees of the EWS quarters were each given Rs 30,000, while others were simply driven away.
