School van turns turtle, girl killed

A five-year-old girl was killed on Tuesday when a speeding school van rammed into a car and turned turtle at the Delhi Cantonment area in the south-west part of the City. The school van driver has been arrested, police said.

Gauri Trivedi, a student of UKG at the Air Force School in Subroto Park, lived with her family at Hari Nagar. According to the police, Gauri was travelling with eight other children when the accident occurred around 1:30 pm.

“It is alleged that the driver of the Maruti Omni (school van) jumped a traffic signal near the Dhaula Kuan metro station and rammed into a Maruti Swift car. The van driver was speeding and driving recklessly,” a police officer said.

As the van overturned, Gauri sustained critical injuries. She was rushed to Safdarjung Hospital where doctors declared her brought dead.

Eighteen-year-old Kanika Goel, a resident of Uttam Nagar who was travelling in the Swift car, was also injured. She was discharged after being administered first aid. Van driver Sumit was arrested on the spot. A case has been registered with the Delhi Cantonment police station.

Sumit also faces charges under the Motor Vehicles Act.

Woman killed

A 29-year-old woman was killed and her 10-year-old son injured after being hit by a speeding taxi at west Delhi’s Mianwali Nagar on Monday.

Chanda, who hailed from UP’s Azamgarh district, was declared brought dead at Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital, while her son Ravi underwent treatment.

Chanda’s father Chetan told the police that they were crossing the road at Peeragarhi when the accident occurred around 12:30 pm. “Ravi was walking ahead of us and seeing a speeding motorcycle, Chanda rushed to hold his hand. But suddenly they were hit by a Tata Indigo car,” he said.

Car driver Dheeraj was overpowered by locals and handed over to the police.
