Breakthrough in Goa homicide case, 2 held

The suspects, Syron Rodrigues, 20 and Chandrakant Talwar, 35, were nabbed in Mumbai and will be brought here by the Goa police team on Saturday, SP A V Deshpande said. Both men have a criminal past with their involvement in a robbery. The police said it was not clear yet if the same men, both residents of Goa, also had a hand in the murders of three other women whose bodies were found in a similar condition — all within 48 hours.

DIG Ravindra Yadav told this newspaper that so far it was clear that Rodrigues and Talwar were involved in Evita Rodrigues’ killing and had burnt her body to make identification almost impossible. “We will know if they are in any way connected to the other homicides after we interrogate them on Saturday,” Yadav said. Evita who went to a friend’s house on Sunday was reported missing by her family on Monday. The same evening, her body turned up miles away from her home, dumped along the Verna highway. She had been strangled and her body burnt. Her family identified her from the remnants of clothing.

Police sources said the schoolgirl’s mobile and the last calls registered had helped track down her killers. Friday’s arrest is a major breakthrough for the Goa police who had 8 homicides to solve in a span of three days.
