JOIN USMan inserts iron rod in girl's throat in rape bid
Barely two months after the December 16 brutal gang rape and murder that shook the nation, a 19-year-old woman suffered severe injuries after a drunk cable operator inserted an iron rod in her mouth when she raised her voice to save herself while he tried to rape her in Lajpat Nagar on Monday, police said.
The incident took place at Jal Vihar near Lajpat Nagar at 8.30 pm on Monday.
The victim was living with her brother and mother in Jal Vihar, and there was some cable TV issue, due to which they were unable to watch television.
They called their operator to fix the problem. The accused Anil Kumar, 26, came to her house on Monday night when she was with her mother. He fixed the cable line and knocked the door for payment.
In the meantime, the girl’s mother had gone out to buy groceries, and had also asked him to come the next day for payment.
Though he left initially, he returned after 10 minutes and knocked the door. As the victim opened the door and was on the phone talking to her classmate, he pushed her inside the house, locked the door and grabbed her, police said.
The victim, a student of class 11 at the local government school, started fighting with him to save herself.
In the meantime, her classmate on phone sensing that something was wrong called the victim’s cousin, Suman Rawat, who stays in the same locality.
Minutes later, Rawat was the first person to reach the victim’s house, following which he alerted the police control room.
“During the fight, the victim successfully pushed Anil away and even slapped him several times in self-defence. When he refused to back down, she grabbed an iron rod lying in the room and tried to fend him off with it,” said a senior police officer.
Anil overpowered her and then snatched the rod from her and pushed it inside her throat in rage, leading to damage in the inner lining of her throat and injuring her trachea.
Though Rawat reached there, Anil managed to flee.
The victim and Rawat screamed for help, after which neighbours rushed to her house and a few of them intercepted Anil. They thrashed him severely and handed him over to police.
The victim was rushed to Moolchand Hospital, from where she was referred to AIIMS as she was critical. Doctors performed a surgery on her throat on Tuesday morning, and her condition is said to be stable.
Anil is also a resident of Lajpat Nagar. He has been arrested and a case for attempt to murder and attempt to rape was filed against him.
