Deepu’s brace powered Army Service Corps to a 4-2 victory over Ashish Ballal Hockey Academy  (ABHA) in their Pool ‘B’ match of the Ozonegroup KSHA Super Division hockey league (first phase) at the KSHA stadium on Thursday.

The Army side registered their first win with goals from Deepu (30th, 33rd), Tutti S (49th) and an own goal by Kirankumar Thokchom (51st) while Sarabjit Singh (53rd) and Md Nizamuddin (58th) sounded the board for ABHA.

ASC stamped their authority over ABHA in the initial stages of the game with Majhi AK and Deepu applying pressure with their runs on both the flanks. ASC saw a chance going down in the 28th minute when Rawa Bhengra and Bhariya Bhengra came close inside the ‘D’ but the former’s shot went wide.

Deepu ensured there were no lapses in the 30th minute when he fired home off a Guria pass to give ASC the lead. The centre half gave ASC more reasons to cheer before taking the break as he struck in the 33rd minute with a timely push-in off a Gurpreet Singh cross.

With their backs to the wall, ABHA were expected to come back hard in the second session. But it was ASC who drew first blood in the 49th minute when Tutti slammed in a nicely sent cross from the pacy Gurpreet. Thokchom’s sloppy clearance in the 51st minute helped ASC go up 4-0.

Singh reduced the deficit for ABHA in the 53rd minute with a well-placed shot off a penalty corner and Nizamuddin rekindled hopes of a comeback with a goal in the 58th minute.
ASC defence was shaky in the last 12 minutes but held on to their two-goal lead until the hooter went off.

Results: ASC: 4 (Deepu KP 30th, 33rd, Tutti S 49th, Kirankumar Thokchom (own goal) 51st) bt ABHA: 2 (Sarabjit Singh 53rd, Md Nizamuddin 58th); BEML: 1 (Kiran 22nd) drew PCTC: 1 (Aind C 8th).
