Last Updated 16 February 2013, 17:30 IST

Union Minister for Minority Affairs K Rehman Khan inaugurated the renovated Jamiya masjid in Kudroli here on Saturday.

Addressing the gathering, he said that the most difficult task among the Muslim community is achieving unity. However, here two separate jamaths have been united to construct a new masjid.

Calling upon the Muslims to follow the preachings of the Quran and the footsteps of Prophet Muhammad, the Minister said that the community members should not forget their duty of serving humanity.

All India Muslim Personal Law Board Member Moulana Mufti Mohammed Ashraf Ali Baquai said that God will not like those who make divisions and groups. Terming the inauguration of Kudroli Jamiya Masjid as a ‘special’ one, he said here an attempt has been made to unite two separate jamaths. The masjid will help in warding off of internal conflicts, thereby nurturing greater cooperation, he said. In his introductory remarks, Jamiya Masjid Kudroli President K S Mohammed Masood said that the twin mosques which were earlier known as ‘Jodu Palli,’ trace their roots back to the time of Tipu Sultan.

Soldiers of Tipu’s army patrolling the nearby Sultan Battery needed a prayer hall to offer prayers and hence a masjid was constructed at Kudroli. Over the years, due to lack of space, another masjid was built next to it and the two mosques started functioning under two separate Jamaths. The decision to construct a new mosque was taken way back in 2006 after obtaining approval from the Wakf Board.

Assembly Deputy Speaker N Yogish Bhat said that the place of worship acts as a centre for service to the downtrodden.

The ambulance service of Jamiya Masjid Kudroli was also inaugurated.

The new building of the masjid has been built at a cost of Rs 4.5 crore, based on the Mughal style. It is built on the lines on famous Delhi Jamiya Masjid. The masjid possesses 134 ft minarets to go with an attractive dome and long arcs.

Mangalore Qazi Thwaka Ahmed Musliyar, MLA U T Khader, National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language Mohammed Obaidulla Sharieff and others were present.
