Industry body Nasscom and Data Security Council of India (DSCI) on Tuesday said they have partnered with Noida Police to educate people on ways to save themselves from falling prey to cyber crimes.

The three-day programme, scheduled on February 20 and February 21, will be inaugurated by Uttar Pradesh Police ADG, NCR, O P Singh. Nasscom and DSCI will drive awareness across IT companies, while Uttar Pradesh Police will run the mass awareness campaign among citizens in the NCR region, a statement said.

As per National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) statistics, there were 1,791 cases registered under IT Act during 2011 as compared to 966 cases during 2010, an increase of 85.4 per cent.

“The cyber space has its pros and cons. While most individuals and companies are well aware of how to use the Internet, not everyone knows the damage that cyber crimes can cause to their personal and business lives,” Nasscom president Som Mittal said.

This collaboration would ensure that the common man and law enforcement agencies, in addition to IT organisations, were well aware of the basic requirements of staying safe in the cyber world, he added.

“The Noida IT-BPO community is also extending support to police, by using online and offline platforms to promote the campaign,” he said.

The programme will include a two-day workshop on law enforcement, where officers will be apprised of the basics of cyber crimes and cyber forensics tools demonstration.
Police officers will visit the campuses of IT or BPO for a sub-programme — ‘Know Your BPO’ — and interact with key stakeholders to learn the challenges that they face with respect to crime in the city.
