Two men have been arrested for alleged involvement in raping a woman after kidnapping her from south-east Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar in 2001, police said on Wednesday.

Vijay Sharma, 32, and Pankaj Kumar, 30, who hail from Bihar’s Madhepura district, were absconding since a case was lodged in December, 2001 and were declared proclaimed offenders in March, 2004.

“The victim alleged that she was kidnapped along with her son on August 17, 2001, by Vijay, his brother Ashok and Pankaj,” said Ajay Chaudhry, additional commissioner of police (south-east).

They were taken to an unknown place where the woman was allegedly raped. They were later taken to Bihar by train and left at Murliganj railway station.

The accused were absconding, but Vijay was finally held after an input that he was working at Gudri Bazaar in Madhepura. Accordingly, a team was sent and Vijay’s movement was tracked with the help of an informer.

On February 14, Vijay was arrested and produced before a Madhepura court. “A transition remand was granted till Monday for production at south Delhi’s Saket court,” Chaudhry added.

Further information was received that Pankaj would be coming near Samrat cinema at Shakarpur. He was arrested on Monday and produced before the Saket court.
