CM to host State MPs on Cauvery board issue

Last Updated 26 February 2013, 19:20 IST

Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar is hosting a luncheon meeting in New Delhi, on Wednesday, for State MPs to discuss the State’s stand that the Centre should refrain from constituting the Cauvery Management Board (CMB).

Briefing reporters, Shettar said he had invited the four central ministers from the State to the meeting. “MPs from the State, cutting across party lines, should put up an united front to safe guard the interest of the State.

The Centre can use its discretionary powers under Sec 6 (A) of the Inter-state Water Dispute Act and put on hold constituting the CMB”, he said.

The final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal (CWDT) was notified on February 20. The Tamil Nadu government recently petitioned the Centre to constitute the CMB and Cauvery Water Regulation Committee to give effect to all provisions of the final award of the Tribunal. If the CMB is constituted, the State government will lose supervisory control over the four Cauvery basin reservoirs.
