SHRC gets 1,746 complaints from DK in 5 years

Major cases include church attacks, pub attack, moral policing, Endo issue and Made Snana among others.

 The Karnataka State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has received 1,746 complaints on human rights violation from Dakshina Kannada district between 2007 and 2013, of which 1,068 complaints have been disposed by the Commission. Thus, the total pending complaints with the Commission stands at 678.

Giving details to media persons, SHRC Member C G Hungund who convened a meeting of the officers at the Deputy Commissioner’s office on Friday, said that the KSHRC has dealt with some of the major cases including the church attacks, pub attack, moral policing in Mangalore, Endosulfan issue, hydro-power projects, Made Snana, case of providing jobs to project displaced families under MSEZ to mention a few.

The KSHRC has listed out 18 complaints as the major cases handled by the State Human Rights Commission in the recent past.

However, on asked about the KSHRC’s stand on the employment of PDFs under the MSEZ, he refused to comment as the issue is still pending with the Commission.
According to the document furnished by the KSHRC member, the Commission has received highest number of complaints in DK in 2009, with the number standing at 518. It is followed by 2011, with 434 complaints having registered.

As many as 269 complaints were filed in 2012 and 26 cases were filed during last two moths.

As far as the State figure is concerned, the SHRC has received 37,758 complaints on human rights violation between July 2007 and December 2012, of which 24,603 complaints have been disposed by the Commission.

Thus, the total pending complaints with the Commission are 13,155.

Expressing concern over increased unlawful detentions state-wide, Hungund asked the police to be cautious while arresting an individual on suspicion. Citing the arrest of two youngsters in Bangalore on the grounds of involving in terrorism activities who were set free by the National Investigative Agency (NIA) recently, he said no person should be targeted for belonging to a particular community.

Visit to district prison

The SHRC member also paid visit to the district prison as a part of his visit to the city. He enquired with the undertrials about the facilities in the jail and problems faced by them. He even visited the kitchen, tasted food, inspected the rooms and toilets and a had a discussion with Prison Superintendent Dodda Kamaiah.
