Child drowns in water storage pit

A two-and-a-half-year-old boy drowned in a pit on Tuesday night in Banaswadi.
The victim identified as Gautham was the only son of Balmiki and Lakshmidevi, daily wage workers from Bihar.

Ten months ago, the couple had arrived in the City in search of livelihood. They stayed at a shed with their son close to a military area at Chikkabanaswadi. Some military officers had employed them for construction work, a few months ago. While the rest of their acquaintances returned to Bihar, Balmiki and Lakshmidevi, stayed put in the City, the police said.

In front of their shed, they had dug a three- and-a-half-feet deep pit to store water. On Tuesday evening, Gautham who was playing, might have fallen into the pit by accident, the police said.

Frantic search

The parents who returned from work started looking for their son, only to find him in  the pit. Though they rushed him to a nearby hospital, he was declared brought dead, the police added.
