The State Labour Department has planned to take up a group housing project in Bangalore, Hubli, Mysore and Mangalore cities for the benefit of construction workers.

Labour Minister B N Bachegowda told mediapersons here on Thursday that apartments comprising 300 flats each will be constructed in all these cities at a cost of Rs 156 crore. The construction workers can stay in these flats temporarily by paying a nominal rent, he added.

The project envisages providing shelter to the workers at an affordable price. The construction workers normally belong to the poorest of poor category. They usually sleep on public places. The project will go a long way in providing them the much-needed shelter, he added.
