Father accuses son-in-law of ‘killing’ her

A 35-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by setting herself ablaze in Dodda Begur on Saturday morning.

Kempamma, from Ungatti village bordering Tamil Nadu, was married to Munikrishna of Dodda Begur 14 years ago and the couple have three children. They were working at a private horticultural nursery in Dodda Begur for the past several years.

Munikrishna, a chronic alcoholic, harassed Kempamma every day, suspecting her fidelity. Kempamma poured kerosene on herself and set herself afire in the kitchen following a fight, said Munikrishna.

‘Attempts’ to rescue

Police sources said that Munikrishna also suffered minor burns when he tried to rescue his wife. But Kempamma succumbed to burns, as their children watched it in horror, the sources said.

However, Thimmarayappa, Kempamma's father has lodged a complaint with the Electronics City police, alleging that his son-in-law tortured his daughter physically and mentally. Munikrishna poured kerosene on her and set her ablaze, he alleged.

The police have registered a case of murder and arrested Munikrishna.
