BMTC bus hits electric pole

Last Updated 17 March 2013, 21:02 IST

Following a brake failure, a BMTC bus rammed an electric pole and a signboard on the busy Lalbagh Road, Sunday evening. However, a major tragedy was averted as the bus had just left the depot and had no passengers onboard.

According to police, the Pushpak bus, which operated on the KR Market-Hosapalya route had left the Shantinagar BMTC depot No 3, when the accident occurred.

‘Tried to stop’

The bus driver, who did not want to be named, told Deccan Herald that the brakes failed near the Poornima cinema junction. He said that he tried to bring the vehicle to a stop by executing a fast right turn, but the bus struck a Bescom electric pole and a signboard before coming to a halt. “The bus narrowly avoided plunging into a bakery just yards away, which could have led to deaths,” he added.

The electric pole also incurred some damage.

BMTC officials concur

Senior BMTC officials from the Shantinagar depot rushed to the accident site and inspected the vehicle.

An official confirmed that the vehicle had suffered brake failure.  Ulsoor Gate Traffic Police have registered a case and are investigating.
