Reddy opposes toll

Last Updated 23 October 2009, 16:16 IST

Sources said that Reddy, after the Cabinet meeting concluded, referred to the decision of the government to collect toll on trucks transporting iron ore, sand and wood. He said that he had convened a meeting of mine owners of Bellary and they have volunteered to build 25,000 houses for those who lost houses in the floods. They have also agreed to pay Rs 100 per tonne for transportation.

If the government makes it a rule to collect Rs 1000 per truck then per ton it would get just Rs 70. Instead, the government should allow mine owners to build houses by contributing Rs 250 crore. A minister reportedly pointed out that chances of mine owners or truck owners approaching court questioning the imposition of toll cannot be ruled out.
