'The item girl tag is overdone'

Actress Priyanka Chopra, whose look in the retro chartbuster Babli Badmaash resembles the one that Amitabh Bachchan sported in his disco number from Yaarana, says that the item song is an ode to the megastar.

In the video of the song — which is part of Sanjay Gupta’s upcoming film Shootout at Wadala — Priyanka is seen wearing an edgy costume of rubber and leather studded with LED lights, loosely resembling the jacket worn by Big B for Saara Zamana. “I have acted in three remake films of Mr Amitabh Bachchan (‘Don’, Agneepath and Zanjeer). I am a big fan of him. Unfortunately, I couldn’t play his role. So, this song is my ode to him,” Priyanka explains.

The retro track is composed by Anu Malik, sung by Sunidhi Chauhan and choreographed by Ahmed Khan. “I had a good experience doing the song. It was hectic but fun. We had to finish the song in two days, since I had to shoot for Gunday. I enjoyed doing the song,” she recalls. However, she’s quick to add that one shouldn’t assume that her real-life persona matches that of Babli. “In real life, I am not badmaash (naughty) — I am decent,” she claims.

Asked if she is alright with the tag of an item girl, Priyanka says, “I think the item girl tag is overdone. It is a guest appearance song that I did for Ekta (Kapoor). Calling it an item song makes it sound a bit cheap. I am satisfied and happy with the way the song has come out. I hope people like it.” There were reports that Priyanka had kept a check on the lyrics of the song, considering the hard stance of the Censor Board on certification of item songs. She confirms, “As a team, we were aware of the recent happenings so we had decided not to use any such words in the song. It has to be a clean song,” she says. “I think we should focus on the laws protecting women rather than targeting the Bollywood songs, films and books,” she adds.
