The City police is all set to introduce battery powered cycles for patrolling the streets of Mysore during the night. The attempt is said to be the first in the State.

City Police Commissioner K L Sudheer has decided to provide eight battery powered cycles to police stations in the city, as a step to go the environment friendly way.

It is compulsory to patrol the city streets at night. Patrolling is usually conducted with either department vehicles or personal vehicles of the policemen resulting in noise pollution at night.  The department also aims at reducing fuel consumption through this exercise.

Commissioner also reasons that motor vehicles would warn criminals involved in theft or other offences, which would not be the case with the noiseless battery powered bicycles.

However, the police department has not allotted funds to introduce battery powered vehicles. Sudheer hopes to buy the cycles by raising donations. If there are enough sponsorers, plans are to provide three cycles per police station.
