Water bodies in the taluk have gone dry. People and cattle alike are reeling under water crisis. At times like this, owner of a private borewell by letting water to a dried up go kunte (cattle pond) in Somanahalli has become a role model for people in the community.

It has been four years since a cattle pond was constructed at Somanahalli that falls under Palicherlu Grama Panchayat.

Water that gets collected in the cattle pond during rainy season is used by people and cattle. However, during summer, it goes dry leaving the cattle in dire straits.

Taking note of the situation, the Palicherlu Grama Panchayat started to divert water left out after use at public water tank to the cattle pond. However, due to frequent power cuts and very less quantity of water left out after use, enough water could not be diverted to the cattle pond.

Considering this, S R Suresh Babu, a resident of Somanahalli, started flowing water from his borewell to the cattle pond. This act of Suresh Babu, has helped not only residents of Somanahalli, Marihalli and Palicherlu but even cattle of these villages.

“ There are 60 families living in Somanahalli. More than 500 cattle can slake their thirst if the cattle pond is filled. During summer, however, the cattle pond dries up pushing the cattle to the brink. I was pained to see this and decided to divert water from my borewell to the cattle pond,” said Suresh Babu.
