A 21-year old engineering student allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his house in Uttam Nagar on Thursday. No suicide note was recovered from the house, the police said.

Sources claimed Brijesh Bisht, a resident of E-Block of Bhagwati Garden in Uttam Nagar, took the step after being ragged by a group of seniors. The police, however, denied the ragging angle. He was pursuing Electronics and Communication Engineering from Marathwada Institute of Technology in Mundka. According to the police, he was found hanging at around 9.30 am.

His family members approached the police after he did not open the door of his room. His mother repeatedly knocked on the door and several attempts were made to make him open the door for over half an hour. “Brijesh was found hanging from the ceiling fan after local police broke open the door,” said Ranvir Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West).

He was rushed to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital where he was pronounced dead. His mother and younger brother were at home when the incident was reported to the police. His parents expressed apprehension that he might have taken the extreme step due to ragging as he had recently complained to them about having been ragged.

“Once his parents shared this information with us, we contacted the principal of the institute who insisted that no such instance of ragging had been brought to his attention,” another officer added.

The police have questioned some of his friends and acquaintances at the institute and are still investigating. His body was handed over to family after post-mortem.
