76.1 pc polling in Udupi

Karkala registers 80.56 pc polling while Kaup registers 72.75 pc

The Udupi district registered 76.1 per cent of polling in the assembly polls held at 1,038 polling stations across the district in five assembly constituencies on Sunday. The district had registered 75 per cent polling in the last Assembly elections.

Karkala Constituency registered highest poll percentage of 80.56, while Kaup recorded the lowest percentage of 72.75. Baindoor, Udupi and Kundapur constituencies registered 75.68, 75.89 and 75.93 percentage respectively.

Initially the polling was slow and picked up in the later hours. At around 9 am, the district recorded six per cent polling. Baindur assembly constituency recorded four per cent, Kaup and Udupi assembly constituencies recorded six per cent each, Kundapur eight per cent and Karkala assembly constituency five per cent.

At around 11 am, the district’s overall percentage of polling was 26.4 percent. At 1 pm, the overall percent of polling in the district was 43 per cent. The polling booth in Government High School Hanumanthnagar coming under Udupi assembly constituency registered 13.44 per cent of polling at 9 am and at around 11 am the polling booth recorded 18.44 per cent of polling. The Government Lower Primary School in Gavali of Haladi-Harkadi Gram Panchayat coming under Kundapur assembly constituency recorded 32 per cent of voting at round 10.35 am.

As many as 346 voters out of 1077 cast their votes. The hyper sensitive booth in Maoist affected areas of Rattadi recorded 42.69 percentage of polling by 11.15 am. The polling booth of Rattadi Higher Primary School has as many as 944 voters. The polling booth in Government Higher Primary School, Amasebailu coming under Baindur constituency registered 50 per cent polling by noon.

In Karkala assembly constituency, the Government Higher Primary School, Kasanamakki in Someshwara registered around 69 percentage of polling at 1 pm. This polling station is a hyper sensitive polling station in naxal area. The hyper sensitive polling booth in Government Higher Primary School in Someshwara Pete recorded 70 per cent by 1.10 pm. The polling station in Government Higher Primary School, Nadpalu in Seethanadi area registered 63 per cent of polling at around 1 pm.

In Kaup assembly constituency, the polling booth in Higher Primary School in Heeriyadka registered 53 per cent of polling at 2.35 pm. The polling station in Manipal Junior College recorded 51 per cent of polling at around 2.55 pm. At 3 pm, the district recorded 52 per cent of polling. Baindur assembly constituency registered 54.51 per cent, Kaup recorded 49.20 per cent, Udupi recorded 53.57 per cent, Kundapur assembly constituency 51.79 per cent and Karkala polling booth 55.24 per cent respectively. At 5 pm, the district registered 63.8 per cent.

The Baindur assembly constituency recorded 66 per cent, Kaup assembly constituency registered 63 per cent. Udupi assembly constituency registered 64 per cent, Kundapur assembly constituency 65 per cent and Karkala recorded 61 per cent.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, District SP Dr Boralingaiah said that the polling was totally peaceful and no untoward incidents were registered in the district. There was minor tension in Marvanthe. Voters were agitated following the behaviour of a police inspector who was trying to disperse the crowd.

They were under the misconception that he was trying to hit them and decided to boycott the poll. However, everything was set right when police personnel convinced them about the reality. The area also recorded highest polling percentage, he added.
