SSLC toppers from Dakshina Kannada, Udupi aspire to be doctors

Manvitha, a student of Vishwa Mangala High School, in Konaje has made Dakshina Kannada district proud by becoming second topper in SSLC examinations in the state.
She is the daughter of Shobha M and Mohandas, who hail from Kamblapadavu on the outskirts of Mangalore.

She has secured 125 in English, 99 in Hindi, 99 in Kannada, 98 in Science and 100 each in Social Studies and Mathematics.

Manvitha has not only brought laurels to the coastal region, she is the first student of Vishwa Mangala  High School to become one of toppers in the state ever since  its inception in 1983.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, she said that she will take up pre-university course in science stream. “My dream is to become a doctor to help poor patients.”

She said: “Every day I studied for three hours. My aim was to score good marks in examination. However, I never dreamt of becoming a topper in the state.”

Apart from performing well in academics, Manvitha is also good at drawing and painting. She has secured more than 200 prizes in painting competitions and recently she has won third prize in Prathibhakaranji, a state level drawing and painting competition. She has also won second and third prize in the ‘Anche Kuncha’, a state-level competition organised by Shanthivana Trust for the last three years.

Manvitha’s father Mohandas, a businessman said he never thought his daughter would emerge as the second topper in the state. “Efforts of her teachers and her mother helped Manivtha to excel in examination. We encourage Manvitha to pursue the course, which ever she wants,” he added.

He said “at the same time, this is a honour to a rural village like Kamblapadavu. Normally, it is the students from cities who come out with flying colours.”

Shobha said “as Manvitha was good in studies, we did not enrol her to tutorials for extra coaching.  She was a consistent performer as far as academics was concerned.”

This year Vishwa Mangala High School has scored cent per cent results and it has scored cent percent result for 16 times in the last 19 years.

Manvitha wants to opt Science stream in PUC and intends to become a doctor.
Vishwa Mangala High School Headmistress Appi said “by looking at her marks in the unit test and preparatory, we had expected her to be one of the topper. We are all happy for her performance.”

Toppers in Udupi

Udupi district has secured third place in the SSLC examinations held in the month of April. The district topped SSLC examinations in 2012 with passpercentage of 89.53 per cent.
As many as 1,41,45 out of 1,61,33 students who appeared for the examination have passed.

When it comes to regular students, the district has achieved 91.41 per cent with 14,007 students out of 15,323 clearing the exam.

As many as 810 students had written the exam privately. Out of which, 138 have passed with a passing percentage of 17.03 per cent.

Mahima H, from Viveka Girls High School, Kota who topped the district with 619 marks told Deccan Herald that she was immensely surprised with the result. She expected good result but never expected to top the district.

She said hard  work is the only substitute to achieve success. She added that she has studied right from the day one with a disciplined time table. She did not attend any tutorials. Her wish is to become a doctor and serve the needy. She was attentive in the class and also she was taught by her mother at home.
