Last Updated 08 May 2013, 19:20 IST

City-based multi-millionaire Ajay Garg, a close aide of Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal’s nephew Vijay Singla and currently in CBI remand, had displayed the title of Bansal’s son’s company — Theon Pharmaceutical Private Limited — as the address outside his own office in the Industrial area of Panchkula near here.

Names of some of the other companies headed by Bansal’s kin, like IVA Healthcare Pvt Ltd and ISIS Packaging Pvt Ltd, were also displayed outside Garg’s office. Sources said Garg’s proximity to Bansal’s kin is evident from this, even in the face of denial. Garg used to function from a showroom-cum-office (SCO) in Sector 26 in Chandigarh till about a year ago, but later shifted his office to the industrial area in Panchkula, where the company titles were displayed, said sources.

It is also learnt that Ajay Garg, who surrendered on Tuesday in a Delhi court and was later remanded in CBI custody, had also managed to procure a big contract from the railways for supply of generators recently. Garg’s networth, including that of one of his companies, namely IEC Genset Limited, was over Rs 200 crore.

His proximity to the accused Vijay Singla, Bansal’s nephew, is well known. Singla had made him the director in one of the companies after he himself demitted charge as the director.

Garg could prove vital in unravelling the railway bribery scandal. He supplies equipment to the railways and other companies. He also worked behind the scenes to execute deals.

His company also supplied medium-voltage equipment and low-tension power equipment to various companies, including the National Hydro Power Corporation, the Indian Army and Indian Oil.

Ajay Garg was also a supplier to DPS Institutions, promoted by a relative of Pawan Kumar Bansal. Besides IEC Gensets, Garg owns many other companies, including an industrial equipment company, Green Field Enterprise, Care Metal Crafts and JK Electronics and Packaging Private.

Other than a palatial one-kanal (500-sq-yd) house in the posh Sector 6 of Panchkula, which is his primary residence, Garg is said to own 10 acres of land in Dera Bassi, a suburb on the outskirts of Chandigarh. He also has a two-kanal house in Sector 6, Panchkula, which is used as a guest house. Garg has three commercial plots in industrial area in Chandigarh, and two showrooms in Sector 14 of Panchkula and one in Sector 26 of Chandigarh, sources said.
