JOIN USThe Delhi government on Saturday refuted the claim made by power distribution companies that they were being forced to buy costly power from gas stations and liquid fuel stations of National Thermal Power Corporation.
It also rejected their claim that the recent outages were the result of the shortage of power in the city. According to power department, keeping in view the last year’s summer peak power load of about 5,600 MW, elelctricity has already been supplied to discoms in bulk to meet the power demand of the capital this year.
“The discoms are not buying costly power from gas stations and liquid fuel stations of NTPC as the government has arranged 6,100 MW of power from reasonably cheaper sources in the interests of consumers,” said a statement released by the department of power.
It also said that the peak load of the city for the last few days has been hovering around 4,500 MW whereas 5,500 MW of power was available during this time. Hence, neither the power supply is inadequate nor is there any need to buy power at exorbitant rates.
The discoms have been directed by the state government to ensure that the local faults are monitored minutely and power is supplied to the general public safely.
“During summer, it is possible that due to ambient temperature which keeps on rising in summer, machines, conductors and wires are susceptible to incur tripping and faults,” said a senior government official.
“Consumers are advised to contact discoms complaint centres in case of power failure for immediately rectificying defaults since power shortage is not the reason for power supply failure,” the official added.
