An Army helicopter on Monday morning crashed in the icy Siachen glacier of the Ladakh region in Jammu and Kashmir. However, there was no loss of life and the pilots were evacuated.

A senior Army official of Udhampur-based Northern Command said a Ceheetal/ Chetek helicopter of Army carrying food and other supplies from the Siachen glacier base camp to forward posts crashed at 8:17 am in the northern side of glacier.  Two pilots, whom the official identified as Major Dave and Lt Col Sharma were flying the plane. “One had fallen into a crevasse on the Glacier and the other pilot has suffered minor cuts. Both of them are being treated and are safe,” the official said. He said helicopter crashed near a forward post.  “The pilots were evacuated to their bunkers,” he said.

The official said that an inquiry has been ordered. “The reason of crash could be development of technical snag. It has been observed that most of the crashes took place due technical snag,” he said.
