Engineering students build all-terrain vehicle for farmers

A team of final year Mechanical Engineering students from Shridi Sai Engineering College, Anekal, Bangalore have designed and built a rugged, single seat, off-road, military, agriculture and eco-friendly recreational vehicle which has the ability to navigate through rough terrain in all types of weather. In order to lend a supporting hand and meet the requirements of farmers, the students designed the All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) using used-vehicle parts.

The cost works out to approximately Rs two lakh. The vehicle, weighing approximately 220 kg, has a 150 cc, four stroke, and single cylinder air cooled engine. The suspension system boasts of a double A-arm suspension in the front and mono suspension in the rear.

Built by Rakshit Shastry and his classmates, Raghunath Reddy, Naveen V Kulkarni, Rajeev M Ronad, Rahul D Patil, T G Vijaya Kumar and Roopa S, the vehicle runs at an average speed of 40-50 km/hour. It has a mileage of 25 kmpl on flat surfaces and 15-20 km/litre on rough terrain. It has a capacity of towing a minimum of 500 kg and mileage achieved is in loaded condition.

The students took eight months to build the vehicle under the guidance of their lecturer, Harish Babu L.
